Bernadette Ballantyne — Beginner’s Soft Pastel Workshop
Sunday 27 September 2026
10.00am – 1.30pm
The Painting Place, Thornton Road, Cambridge
Come along for a relaxed and hands-on day exploring the beautiful medium of soft pastel pencils and learn how I use pastel pencils to create my detailed floral and pet portraits. This workshop is suitable for beginners, or anyone wanting to build their confidence and understanding of soft pastels.
What we’ll cover
We’ll begin by exploring the materials I use and some of my favourite soft pastel pencils, papers and other supplies. I’ll then guide you through some simple exercises using Pastelmat paper, looking at techniques such as layering, blending and building up colour.
I’ll demonstrate my approach to creating a floral artwork using soft pastel pencils, sharing the techniques I use to achieve detail, depth and realism.
The remainder of the day will be your opportunity to create your own artwork with plenty of individual guidance and support. You can choose to create a floral piece or a pet portrait, depending on what inspires you.
No previous experience is required, and all materials are provided. You’ll just need to bring your own lunch and a water bottle.
